Forums offline temporarily [Update: Now open again!]

My hosting company has detected the large amounts of spam being posted on the forum and have gone in and moved the forum files away, effectively taking it offline. I’m not immediately sure what the best way is to remedy this, but I’ll consider all the options and hopefully have it back up and running soon.

However, as everyone probably already knows, I’m not very active around here anymore due to lack of time, so unfortunately I have no way of telling you how long it’s going to take.

I also want to ask you whether you would be OK with me installing a new forum, or if you prefer I try to salvage what’s left of the old one? A new database would mean new user registrations, but also a whole lot of better, more stable features (and no spam), whereas merely upgrading the old one would likely preserve all the spam posted so far and might not stay effective in combating future attacks.

Update: I figured the forum was pretty much broken beyond repair in the state it was in (again, I’m sorry about this), so I felt it necessary to take some drastic measures. Every user with an ID over 1000 has been deleted, along with all their posts. I realize there’s a chance there were some legitimate users among them, and I’m very sorry about removing you, but there was little else to do. Thankfully, this restored the forums to a very usable state, with 99% of the spam deleted along with the bot accounts that posted them.

I have also migrated the forums over to PHPBB, meaning it’s now faster, better and much more secure than it was before. There’s now not only an activation requirement on new members, but also captcha verification and restrictions on new members. Some of this may be a bit draconian at first, but as we go along, I’ll be loosening it up to make the forums more comfortable for everyone.

All the old users should be migrated over to the new forums, but if you’re having troubles logging in, first try to reset your passwords by following the instructions on the login page. If that doesn’t work, feel free to contact me to let me know, and I’ll look into it. The conversion from the old forums to the new ones isn’t perfect, but so far I haven’t noticed any immediate issues myself.

So, without further ado, I once again welcome you to the Quiet Storm forums!

10 Years of Quiet Storm!

I started thinking about how long I’d been a fan of Fairuza, and I couldn’t really calculate it any closer to “since sometime in high school”. The first movie I watched with her was The Craft, and like many others, I was instantly drawn to Ru’s dark, gothic character. It took a while before I found out who she even was (this wasn’t “before the internet”, but well before everyone had a computer with internet access at home), but when I did, my first trembling highs turned into full-blown addiction. I started looking for more movies she’d starred in, and I wanted to share my obsession with everyone else in the world. Well, what better two hobbies to combine than Hollywood star fandom and computer geekery?

It turns out that, upon reading some of the oldest entries I still have saved, the very first website I ever created in Fairuza’s honor went live 10 years ago this year. Unfortunately, I don’t have the actual site, nor do I know when exactly it went up, but I’d say it’s still worthy of a mention, if not celebration. 10 years of admiring Fairuza’s acting, her energy and her charisma. A whole decade’s worth of movies and interviews, articles and photos. It really is fantastic.

I really hope you all share this jubilation with me, because I know you’re all even greater fans than I am. This site exists because I’m not alone in my opinion, and that makes me endlessly grateful.

So, with that I want to give a great, big thank you to everyone who visited this site, who still keeps visiting. Thank you for making this site what it is: not much, but something. I think I can honestly claim this is the only something I’ve ever really accomplished in life, so far.

Unfortunate downtime

Hi all, we’re back!

I sincerely apologize for the downtime but unfortunately there was nothing I could to to bring the site back up. The site is hosted on a friend’s server, and he recently moved to Germany to study. Needless to say, without any physical access to the server, we had no way of finding out what was wrong.

Anyway, all problems have been worked out now, and Quiet Storm is back in business!

Changes

Since I don’t take any pleasure in freaking anyone out, I thought I’d take this opportunity to give you all a heads up: Things are going to change around here.

Sometime during they day tomorrow, you’ll see another site here at Fairuza.net. It’ll be different, but still the same. You see, I’m reshaping everything that is Fairuza.net and turning it all into something bigger, something better. Sometime tomorrow, you’ll wave goodbye to Fairuza.net forever and instead embrace Quiet Storm – The Ultimate Fairuza Balk Fansite.

Major changes seldom pass without slight hiccups though, and I hope you’ll be patient while we correct them as they appear. I, and my new team of Quiet Storm editors, will be doing everything to keep this place running as smoothly as possible.

You might wonder what’s so great about this new site, and I’m going to tell you straight up:

  • Completely new website, powered by WordPress
  • The ability to comment on news posts
  • Brand new gallery (which, gradually, will be filled with tons of new pictures)
  • Unified Forum and Gallery login

There’s probably going to be lots more with time, but for now this is plenty

So grab a cold one, put on your Fairuza-flick of choice and relax. Quiet Storm will be here in no time.

New on Fairuza.net: Trivia!

That’s right, I’ve added a trivia-section to the biography. This will give you more insight into what makes Fairuza… Fairuza. There’s the story behind her name, a detailed description of all her tattoos and some other fun-to-know facts and tidbits.

You’ll find it all here.

Fairuza.net is now live!

As the year 2006 draws near, and the snow keeps falling to the ground, Fairuza.net first sees the light of day. What once was, and had for a very long time always been, a small fansite hosted on other peoples domains, is now it’s own being in the digital space. Fairuza.net is now the home of all that is Fairuza.

Welcome… To Fairuza.net!

A Fairuza Balk Fansite – 4.0

I don’t think any of you have missed that the world of Fairuza Balk has been revolving rather slow lately. I haven’t heard a single peep about what she might be up to nowadays.
Well, to remedy my boredom I set out to create the Fairuza Balk Fansite 4.0. That is, a whole new face to a site that’s existed 4 years now (…and counting).

Long time no see, eh? :)

I’m really sorry I haven’t updated in so long, but I really haven’t had the time and Fairuza-related news have been very scarce lately. This newsPost however, marks the dawn of a new era (I hope…). This newsPost is the first one after finishing the brand new design of the site. I’ve updated everything to use a more flexible layout using divs and CSS instead of lots of nested tables and messy HTML.

And yes, I know the other sites aren’t fitted to the new design yet, but they will be shortly. It’s quite a bit of work, so just bare with me.
