My copy came in the other day. It's from Platinum, the same company that put out the domestic The Maker DVD (and I strongly suspect have some connection to/or are Nu Image/Sterling, the company that put out the American Perfekt DVD) and the quality is equivalent (it's not Criterion, but it's better than any VHS you've seen of it). Given that it's a made for TV movie, the aspect ratio is probably right (the other two mentioned are almost certainly pan & scan).

The movie is directed by actor Brian Dennehy, who also defended Balk against murder charges in another TV movie (which he did not direct) called Murder in the Heartland. This is a much sillier film than that one. Mostly it's a predictable noir that uncomfortably balances a jaw-droppingly ignorant courtroom procedural (yeah, I know it was based on a novel written by a judge, which makes it that much more of a head-scratcher) with a chaste version of the Basic Instinct erotic thriller blueprint but with a kind of dated late seventies/early eighties cop show atmosphere. The use of music is egregiously corny in this regard. Almost every scene transition is a heavy handed lone saxophone, or a lone piano, or flute...and so on. It's not boring though, but you may not feel smarter for the measure of enjoyment you eke from it.

Balk looks stunning in cropped platinum blonde (ala Life In The Fast Lane/There's No Fish Food In Heaven or Tollbooth) and does an excellent job with some unworkable dialogue (esp. in those courtroom sequences) and attacks her sleazier moments with a relish that the other actors can't seem to be called upon to bother with (though once seen, the image of Brian Dennehy and Bonnie Bedelia tongue wrestling will be forever imprinted on your brain-you have been warned).

Hey, it's under $10 (hell under $5 some places) and you get to see Ru in a tartan mini-skirt and a skin-tight leather outfit...go for it.
